The Greater Kalamazoo United Way advances the common good in Kalamazoo County by creating opportunities for a better life for all.
Originally founded in 1914 as the Kalamazoo Associated Charities, the original concept was to form an organized effort to gather and invest resources in health & human service programs to address growing community needs. In 1971, the Kalamazoo Community Chest and Community Services Council merged to form the Greater Kalamazoo United Way.
Today, GKUW continues to focus on strengthening youth & families, increasing self-sufficiency and improving physical and mental health – all in an effort to continue to build thriving communities.
GKUW continues to powerfully and positively impact our community by:
Gathering & Investing Financial Resources
Since 1971, the GKUW Annual Community Campaign has successfully raised $217,693,279. Last year, the GKUW Annual Community Campaign raised just over $9 million.
Adding Value to Contributions
Last year alone, GKUW led or assisted in securing, administering and/or leveraging more than $6 million to directly benefit our community.
Organizing Volunteers
Since 1994, 9,035 Day of Caring Volunteers have successfully completed 775 GKUW Member Agency improvement projects. Each year, thousands of community members generously volunteer their time and talents.
Partnering & Collaborating
GKUW continues to partner and collaborate across all sectors. GKUW uniquely brings together big business, small business, faith based organizations, health & human service providers, area foundations and many more to positively impact change in Kalamazoo County.
